Kids Yule Story

This is an extension of my post in the Holidays section. I just spoke with my son's teacher, and I'll be giving a presentation about Yule on Thursday morning!! His teacher suggested that a story is a good way to keep the kids' attention, so if any of you have a favorite Yule story (whether intended for kids or not, as long as it's appropriate for a group of 5 and 6 year olds), please share it with me. OK, so I got inspired at work tonight, and came up with this. What are your thoughts?

The Earth Mother was cold and sleepy. Her Husband, the Great Hunter, was gone, and without His warmth, She froze and made a dark Winter for all the people and animals. But, She still cared for them all, and so kept pine trees, holly, and mistletoe growing so everyone would know She was only sleeping.

Then one day, She felt a new, different kind of warm life, very close by. She looked South, down Her body, and saw a growing, golden light shining in Her belly. It was a baby! She whispered to all the people and animals that soon the Light would come, so the people gathered around their fires and started singing into the darkness.

The Earth Mother felt the baby-fire growing stronger and warmer, and finally the Longest Night ended, and the baby, the Sun Child, was born! All the people and animals cheered, because they knew that Spring could not be far behind Him. The Sun Child laughed and danced with them and named the day Yule, which means wheel, because His dancing started the Earth Mother turning like a wheel again. And the people were right, because Her turning made the days get warmer and last longer, and Spring came right on time. The end, and Blessed Be.

The presentation in my son's class went GREAT!! The kids listened well to the story, and REALLY enjoyed the coloring sheet (which was the part I suspected they'd like the most anyway)! Right after I finished the story, one child commented that he thought the baby in the belly was God. I smiled at him and said, "That works!" Kids are a lot more insightful than we adults often give them credit for While they were coloring, the teacher asked me if we also celebrated Christmas, and I told her that we do, we just consider it more of an American cultural holiday rather than a religious one. I'm so pleased with how today went *big smile*
